Cape Town, South Africa: the Mother City’s premier recurring metal event returns on Saturday 29 July. Join us at www.metal4africa.com as we celebrate WinterFest’17, and marks our twenty-second event installment. This will be our fourth time at the newer venue at 12 Viben Avenue in Brackenfell, which is also re-opening for WinterFest’17 as Metronome. The location is just a short way off of the N1 National Highway on the outskirts of the Mother City.
2017 presented us with many attractive line-up opportunities, but with only limited slots available for this one-day musical outing, the selections have been made with a maximum impact in mind. With this also being the first event since 2013 to feature an international guest, we also tailored the artwork especially to suit the occasion; therefore, meet our African-themed “Angel Of Death”.
Visiting from neighbouring Botswana – and returning to Cape Town for the first time in seven years – we invite old-school heavy metal band Skinflint. The trio perform a bare-knuckle rendition of traditional metal, but richly infused with the mystique and intrigue of African folklore. The band returned just recently from a European tour supporting none other than Tarja Turunen (original vocalist for Finland’s Nightwish).
Witness the end of an era
Another inclusion to make this festival a must-see is Johannesburg’s melodic death metal titans SacriFist. With a 25-year career to it’s mighty name, WinterFest’17 will be Cape Town fans’ last ever opportunity to see the nation’s oldest surviving legacy band live. It’s members – still consisting of two of the original founders – have announced SacriFist‘s retirement in 2017.
Capetownians are truly spoiled at WinterFest’17, because we’ve booked even a third visitor from afar. Pretoria’s Maximum Carnage return to the M4A stage after it’s spectacular death metal frenzy at WinterFest’14 three years ago. Be sure to also keep a watch out for the coming of Blackened Sun from Maximum Carnage soon; because WinterFest’17 is the official album launch show!
On the local front, selections have been no less potent with Megalodon also performing an album launch show at WinterFest’17. The band will play the final slot and an extended set filled with surprises as we fare the members well on their journey to Germany the next day. There, they will represent South Africa at the global Wacken Metal Battle.
Celebrate another SA legacy
Another legacy band takes the stage while its celebration of fifteen years rapidly approaches. Terminatryx brings in a darker mood along with a much needed change of pace between the masculinity of death metal. Terminatryx is a female-fronted industrial/dark rock band with plenty of metal influence to bring a flair for the dramatic to the line-up.
Subject To Slaughter is back! You’ll see them play for the first time in 2017 live at WinterFest’17 with a new drummer, some new energy, and a fresh twist with their bone-crushingly chuggy style. Brace for impact!
Welcome the new at WinterFest’17
For the first time on the M4A stage, we welcome Bottom Feeder. Having only emerged in 2016, this band is redefining the meaning of heavy; expect gritty distortion and a to-the-point style boldly referred to as powerviolence.
Nethercyst is another newcomer into the M4A. Prepare for a thrash/groove-infused mosh machine which has been making it’s presence strongly felt on the Cape Town circuit in recent times.
WinterFest’17 will feature a second entertainment area, almost as tasty as the live stage; Nytrox Productions and friends return to DJ the best in local and international metal music. Due to the cold weather, we’ve prepared some fireplaces outside. And because we love all things metal, we’ve also booked a range of merchants. Offerings will include band merchandise, jewellery, handcrafted goods, along with other rarities. Most of all, do take advantage of our Meet & Greet photo booth. Fans can have a photo taken, printed, and signed by your favourite bands; and all right there on the spot.
