Johannesburg, South Africa: word is on the street that Ragnarök III, the third year of this Extreme Metal event series hosted by Draconmen Media, is growing. 2018 sees the concept not only expanding to a second city, but also incorporating a tour aspect; including guests from Italy.
Ragnarök III: a tale of two cities, and visitors from far away
Ragnarök III takes place over the weekend of 12-13 October, with a Friday night show in Cape Town and Saturday in Johannesburg. This is a bold new step for Draconem Media, as it also includes a visitor from abroad.
Pulvis Et Umbra members are no strangers to South African audiences. The band traveled to South Africa twice in 2016; first supporting Poland’s Behemoth live in Johannesburg, and then again on a DIY tour to also explore Cape Town.
“When Pulvis et Umbra came out a few years back, I made good friends with their vocalist Damy who was desperate to come back and play in South Africa, so we agreed that the 3rd Ragnarok would be the best time for them to come back and to arrange shows in both Cape Town and Johannesburg. Apart from their amazing contributions, I asked them which bands they wanted to play alongside and a huge compliment and honour was they asked for Omentum to join them at both shows.” ~ Chelsea Mulock-Bentley (event coordinator, Draconem Media)
Omentum: a Cape Town debut:
Omentum emerged onto the South African scene in Johannesburg last year with an experimental edge. Brutally lighthearted, the band calls itself “comedic death metal” and sports a whopping three bass guitarists for extra heaviness! Omentum will make its Cape Town debut on 12 October as touring partner with Pulvis Et Umbra.
Cape Town features all-new faces to the event series, whereas Johannesburg sees a few repeats among fresh talent.
“As the years go on we try to keep things fresh and interesting. We welcome back some ‘old faces’ as well as some new faces to the lineup as well as a new city. Ragnarok 3 is by far the biggest event to date in the series. We really hope that it will continue to grow for many years to come.” ~ Chelsea Mulock-Bentley
Apart from Italy’s Pulvis Et Umbra, Mozambique’s Norbormide and East London’s Forsaking Fate will also appear at the Johannesburg show; Forsaking Fate returning to Hate City after a previous visit, also hosted at a last years Ragnarök and making an imprint on the Gauteng audiences.

“We simply cannot wait to continue to grow the event and the Draconem brand with the bands and fans behind us. We don’t need any awards to verify our position in the scene. We do what we love and love what we do, take care of the bands and the rest takes care of itself, this is and always will be our vision and mission as we continue on this deliciously brutal journey.” ~ Chelsea Mulock-Bentley
