Interview by David Devo Oosthuizen
With thanks to Favour The Brave Agency
Thank you for taking the time to chat to me [David Devo Oosthuizen] before your South African Tour kicks off on 8 May 2014. We are all very excited to see your Swiss based Melodic Heavy Metal delivered direct on African soil!
David: What is the latest news from the Dreamshade Camp?
Dreamshade (Fella): We just started to write new material! The new stuff sounds very epic and melodic, just the way we like it, plus we added some new elements.
David: Are you guys excited to be playing South Africa for the first time?
Dreamshade (Fella): Man, we just can’t wait for this! Never thought we would have been playing Africa in our career and we still can’t believe this is actually happening.
David: How would you personally best describe your sound and style?
Dreamshade (Fella): Well, we actually don’t like to label our music style. Let’s say it is a very melodic, epic and modern type of Metal with pretty heartfelt songs and lyrics that everyone can relate to. It’s not just Metal though. There are loads of music genres in it. I think everybody can listen to our music even if you don’t usually listen to Metal, Hardcore or Punk.
David: South Africa is known for picturesque landscapes, remarkable wildlife, great weather, friendly people and outstanding beverages. Are you guys looking forward to savoring these on your SA trip and going on a Metal Safari?
Dreamshade (Fella): Yes, of course! We want to see as much of the country as possible and the Safari is a total must, so we will do it. We are also wine lovers and usually drink it way more than beer so we can’t wait to taste yours!
David: South Africa has a great Metal Scene. Do you guys know any of our local bands and are you excited to be playing with them?
Dreamshade (Fella): I don’t know many South African metal bands actually. I was currently listening to Truth & Its Burden and The Drift and they kick ass! I also know Seether, Jack Parow and Die Antwoord. Maybe you can suggest us some of your bands!
David: So it has been just about 15 months since you launched The Gift of Life. Have you guys been touring all this time? Any time to take a bit of a break and start looking at new material and work on new ideas yet?
Dreamshade (Fella): We’ve been touring for a long while after the release of the record. Mostly Europe, Russia and the US. We would love to go to Asia after South Africa. Working on it.
David: We love the videos for “Photographs”, “Consumed Future” and “Your Voice”. Any plans for more videos soon?
Dreamshade (Fella): Thank you! We are releasing some new video material soon. We never really released tour videos and stuff, so I guess that’s the kind of thing we’re going to go for.
David: And chance of a Dreamshade Live DVD in the near future?
Dreamshade (Fella): We’ve been filming loads of live material during the last year. We will probably also release some live footage.
David: Anybody in particular you want to collaborate with in the future for new material?
Dreamshade (Fella): I would personally love to work on the vocals production with Mike Shinoda from Linkin Park. We worked very well with Jacob Hansen who mixed and mastered The Gift Of Life and I think we will work with him again in the future.
David: What is your favorite pastime on the tour bus?
Dreamshade (Fella): We are also very close friends outside of the band. Some of us live together too so the Bus is a very fun time. My personal favourite pastime is breaking Kevin’s balls haha! His reactions are just too funny.
David: What is currently spinning non-stop on your music device?
Dreamshade (Fella): I’m currently listening to the latest A Day To Remember record and also to a lot of non-Metal artists like Bastille from the UK. Go check them out!
David: What song is your favorite to play live as a band?
Dreamshade (Fella): There’s more than just one I guess. Photographs and Wants & Needs are very fun to play on stage.
David: What song gets the crowds going the most from your experiences on the road, and to that end what song do you anticipate will get the South African crowd going the most?
Dreamshade (Fella): I guess the fast ones are also the crowd kicking so I would go for ‘Sandcastles’ and ‘Your Voice’. You guys will get them for sure!
David: What message would you like to give to the South African audience awaiting your imminent arrival?
Dreamshade (Fella): Brothers & Sisters from South Africa, we just cannot wait to visit your country and people! We want the parties to be huge so help us spread the word about this tour and let’s get all your friends to the shows! Be ready.
Thank you for your time to share some insights. We are counting the days until you touch down in South Africa in May 2014. See you in person soon!
