Atlantic South came to surface in Cape Town sometime during 2014 and have since done much to re-energize the ‘Mother City’s’ metalcore spectrum within the scene. A lot has happened since the last time we spoke with them in April (see article here), and this weekend, the band will reach their most significant milestone yet by releasing their self-titled Atlantic South EP at Mercury Live. Guesting along with them on the bill are Cape Town’s own instrumental sensation OhGod, and Johannesburg’s legendary modern metal outfit Facing The Gallows.
“It’s pretty awesome to have Facing The Gallows come down. We met them while on tour in Bloemfontein, and from there we thought it would be a great idea to ask them to come support our launch. They didn’t hesitate and now here we are. They have also one of our favourite bands for a very long time.” ~ Gareth Howard (guitar, Atlantic South)
The EP, recorded at 7 String Studios in Durbanville, will feature six tracks, of which three have already been heard as online sample. However, Atlantic South have applied tweaks to all three, including a complete re-track of ‘Rip Tide’, to offer fans a completely fresh listening experience.
“The theme of the EP is that every track a has a positive or motivational message behind it, such as struggles that one encounters in their life and how to deal with them.” ~ Gareth Howard
Gareth describes how the band will be spending some time on the circuit following the release, with views to tour before settling back into the studio. He admits that the band has already written a lot of new material, but have yet to decide if the next project will be another EP or a full-length.
“But we believe the latter to be more appealing. So right now, I can say you can expect an album. We will already be whipping out two new live tracks at the launch.” ~ Gareth Howard
We were also impressed to see the effort which the band has put into their identity since they first appeared to us. Gareth credits Zain Domo of Inzane Designs (also the personality behind UnScene Entertainment) with the “new look” and extends a thanks also to Carla Cubic at 7 String Studios for her involvement in the process.
