Kimberley, South Africa: The countdown to Behemoth returning to South Africa (previous article here) continues with only three more weeks to go, and fans in all sorts of unexpected corners of the country are preparing themselves. The local promoter, Witchdoctor Productions, have introduced a lucky draw where winners in Johannesburg and Cape Town will be awarded the prize of metal shields and swords, and a meet and greet opportunity to get the prize items signed by Behemoth. Where do these awesome prizes come from? We sought out local craftsman and extreme metal super-fan, Raynier Swiegers, who created these unique items:
“Metal is not music to me; it’s a way of living and a very powerful tool to deal with reality. It makes me kick the world square in it’s face every day… a force that gives me power to conquer each day as it comes! I have been into Metal since the early 90’s. Some people told me I would eventually grow out of it, but I am now 36 and still going strong! You cannot create a Metalhead. You are either born with it or not. I mean, look at Lemmy, King Diamond, Rob Halford…” ~ Raynier Swiegers
Situated in the relatively isolated town of Kimberley, in the Northern Cape, Raynier bides his time between the rare live show opportunity by extending his profession into his hobby, combining metalworks with, well, Metal! Thus, the creation of the prizes for the lucky draw could be forged by his hands.
“Its part of my daily job. I mainly specialize in gate, fence, shade ports and car ports. The shields started off as just an idea. I love the Vikings and I wanted some Viking related décor. So I forged only two shields. It happened quickly as I am a very impulsive person; one night my friend and brother of Metal, AC, come to visit me. We had quite a fair amount of drinks and he made me a deal for the very first one I forged… Asshole! *laughs* Soon after that, I posted some pictures and Shaughn Pieterse at Witchdoctor Productions ordered a bunch. I am busy making some more, with some new and fresh ideas.” ~ Raynier Swiegers
Needless to say, Raynier, who will be traveling close to 500 kilometers to attend the Behemoth concert at Bassline in Newtown, is thrilled that his creations will be touched by the hands of some of his idols and gifted to fellow metalheads. Of course, he has his own private metal shields too.
“I never even thought that something like this would happen! I am very honoured and very proud of this. I’ll be taking mine off of my cabinet and getting them signed as well.” ~ Raynier Swiegers
As with all things in life, you have to be ‘in it to win it’. Witchdoctor Productions invites all ticket holders to enter the competition by registering their ticket number for the draw on their website. Non-ticket holders can purchase via Quicket for Cape Town here or Johannesburg here, and then enter.
An identical competition is running for Greek extreme metal legends Rotting Christ, scheduled to appear in South Africa later this year (previous article here). To be eligible for that lucky draw, register here.
