For the South African metalhead, there has never been anything of great interest offered by local television until on the 1st of June last year, when MK Ondergrond came blasting out of nowhere. Created by Louis du Pisani (known also for his activities as a musician in the underground scene, as well as being the founder of Seasons Wither festival,) through the MK channel, a platform has finally been established in South Africa from where local alternative and metal bands can find themselves showcased alongside international favourites.

Louis admits that one of the shows greatest challenges in promoting locally created content is that there is a dire lack of local material. “There is a shortage of broadcast-standard videos being produced by local metal acts,” he told us in a previous conversation, “But we’re always open to reviewing possible content for the show.”

This sets a challenge to all local musicians to find creative ways to make a strong visual impact, and to become more resourceful than ever. In the world of mobile technology and broadband, more and more music is being discovered, shared, and consumed by means of video. This is obviously a powerful medium as it utilizes two of human’s five sensory organs, and the visuals tend to captivate a persons attention for longer than, for example, a static image which accompanies most online music. Video is an important medium which should no longer be ignored or shunned by local alternatives, simply dismissed as “too expensive”. It is already an essential component of establishing musicians in the global market place. MK Ondergrond provides the platform where those who have put in the greatest effort can be rewarded by seeing their work broadcast.

Perhaps what is most exciting about the beginning of Season II is that metalheads can expect a greater volume of more metal-orientated content.
