Cape Town, South Africa: Johannesburg’s old school death metal band Dark Matter will be touring it’s The Murder Inn gig concept to Cape Town this weekend for a show at The Nameless Pub in nearby Somerset West, and ROAR in Observatory.
“‘The Murder Inn’ started as a celebration of Dark Matter’s ten-year anniversary. The first event was held in 2013 at Boston Rock lounge in Jhb, featuring bands like 11th Hour, Spectral Realm, Avenging Anarchy and Adorned in Ash. The walls were cracked that night!
We then three years later had a second ‘The Murder Inn’ at Warriors Pub & Grill in Bloemfontein, featuring alongside local powerhouse Dreams of Nightmares, and again Adorned In Ash and Nerve Zero. Moshpit capital of SA.” ~ Jacques Kirsten (vocals / bass guitar, Dark Matter)
Jacques is pleased that the gig concept will finally reach Cape Town. He describes it simply as Dark Matter‘s way to spend some quality time with the bands they enjoy and would love to play with, and to promote equality between bands.
But for us as Capetonians, just who is Dark Matter? For readers new to this name, it may surprise you to learn that the band consists of largely scene veterans whose activity dates back to the 90’s era of South African metal. Jacques’ own history dates back to playing with local legends SacriFist, along with Dark Matter guitarist Paul Verster who also played for Retribution Denied. Drummer Grant had played for another legacy band, Agro, and Loathed, whilst second guitarist Morne Linell is known for his tenures with Mute and Death Valley Blues.
“The Dark Matter story began simply out of our love for heavy music and we just really wanted to jam. All of us came from bands that moulded the industry. We truly have been fortunate to spend time with – and on stages with – some amazing musicians, and to also play festivals and some international tours to South Africa such as Fleshgod Apocalypse. We have a simple creedo have fun, play our best, and don’t do anything with the taste of dick in our mouths!” ~ Jacques Kirsten
As to the future, the band have proclaimed that a full-length album is finally on its way and should emerge within the next few months. No further comment was available on this point in the interim, save that the band is continuing it’s travels to raise awareness of themselves for when it releases.
Joining Dark Matter for both shows will be Cape Town’s own old school death metal act, The Fallen Prophets, and a newcomer making it’s debut with Abaddon.
