Capetonian metal enthusiasts have been offered a solution to satisfy their hunger for metal, bands, camping, and braai! A couple of years have passed since the days of Rock The River when metallers could gather en masse for a few days of camping away from the hustle and the bustle to enjoy some summer sunshine and all things heavy metal over New Year’s. Earlier in 2015, however, a family based near Riversdal have opened up their farm to the metal community by hosting the first ever GeraasPlaas festival in June. They will be doing so again for this coming New Year’s weekend, spanning the dates 30 December to 01 January, inviting metallers to come together from far and wide.
The farm, Zout Van Die Aarde (aka: GeraasPlaas), is situated in the Hesseque District in the Western Cape, not far from the attractive Garden Route and nearby attractions such us The Overberg, Still Bay and Mossel Bay. The festival thus serves as a perfect stop-over for the metal-inclined en route to other holiday destinations.
“The main idea is to attract people to support the towns and local business in our district, and for fellow metalheads to break away from the city life for a few days and release some tension in the great outdoors.” ~ Wian Bester (GeraasPlaas, event coordinator)
The fledgling festival will offer live music entertainment over two stages on the main date, 31 December, with other activities spread across the full duration of the event. Bands will include some well-known acts from Cape Town, such as host band Imperial Destruction, along with guests Terminatryx, The Fallen Prophets, Devilspeak and a herd of exciting newcomers on the scene, and with the likes of LadyAxe from Port Elizabeth, plus Bokgot and Spectral Realm from as far away as Gauteng for a darkly eclectic line-up.
“It’s a camping event, so pull in for night or two under the stars and partying around bonfires with live music. Be sure to take some time and enjoy the bird life at the salt pans as well.” ~ Wian Bester
Wian describes improvements to the grounds and facilities as well since their first foray into festival culture earlier in 2015. There are now better ablution facilities including showers, a “beach” area near the newly added second stage, and all sorts of activities planned with prize giveaways. Tickets remain modestly-priced at R150 if bought via www.computicket.com, or R200 if bought at the gate upon arrival.
Main Stage line-up and order of appearance:
The Insomniac Diaries
Red Tape Rebellion
The Alpha Sequence
The Fallen Prophets
