With the searing heat felt across the country in recent weeks, this event name just clicks! Hardcore Summer II is coming up at Smugglers Pub in Johannesburg this weekend for it’s second installation. Second installation? Seeing as there are some good bands on the bill, we investigated the concept to find out who, what, why, where and when.
“This is our second Hardcore Summer event, first being in 2013. From what I heard back then, it is a quiet time of the year regarding shows, hence my thought of doing one last ‘big show’ before everyone heads down to the coast for the holidays.” ~ Phillip Leach (promoter, Hardcore Summer)
Phillip was managing local band Forever Unbound, who were still fairly new at the time, and decided to put a show concept together and feature a load of bands with similar hardcore and metalcore influences. Despite being held on a Thursday night, Phillip explained that his invitation to a couple of more well-known bands was enthusiastically heeded, and a killer show materialized.
“That was apparently one of the busiest nights the club had on a Thursday, or so some of the staff said, so it was a pretty decent turn out.” ~ Phillip Leach
2014 Did not happen on account of unfavourable circumstances at the time. However, in 2015, Phillip has begun to feel that an itch needs to be scratched. After contacting his old friends in Forever Unbound, it was apparent a spark still remained.
“So I started contacting some more bands; Riddelbreak being one of the first, since I’ve known Gareth for a while already and I love their music. They were kind enough to do a song for me for my ten-year wedding anniversary as a special mention! Anyways, totally stoked for this show as the majority of bands playing all have a good following and it’s a lekker venue as well. Devon from Smugglers Pub really went out his way to help out, seeing as Iron Tusk closed down.” ~ Phillip Leach
Hardcore Summer II takes place this coming Saturday, 05 December, 2015 at Smugglers Pub. For those who are uncertain, Smugglers Pub is in the same location as the old Cool Runnings near Fourways.
