Cape Town, South Africa: eclectic metal band Ill System, which has been catching new listeners by surprise at every turn throughout it’s fifteen-plus years of history, has announced a new guitarist and ambitions to get back into the studio after more than ten years since it’s last release.
The band bids farewell to fellow founding member Bobby Addison who has set off on a new musical journey with heavy rockers Last One Alive. The new axeman to step up is Gareth Howard of none other than Atlantic South where he still maintains his guitar duties in addition to Ill System.
“The first time I saw Ill System live was at M4A SummerFest’15 and I immediately became a huge fan. Their energy and groove just got me straight off the bat. It still hasn’t really sunk in, but I’m proud to be a part of it. They are a great bunch of guys and I’m excited for this new and exciting adventure with them. I have big shoes to fill, so I hope I can do them, as well as Bobby, proud.” ~ Gareth Howard (guitar, Ill System/Atlantic South)
Bobby Addison and Sean Olsen, who founded the band together in 2001 after some months of jamming together, relocated the band in it’s entirety to the UK in 2003 with current drummer Ramone Pickover. It was there where Ill System recorded it’s debut EP International Assassins and rose to some acclaim before disbanding in 2006. The band reformed locally in 2014 as most band members found themselves returned to South Africa.
“I’m looking forward to the next chapter in the Ill System story. We’ve had a few line up changes over the years, but the essence of the Ill System sound has always remained consistent.” ~ Sean Olsen (vocals/multi-instrumentalist, Ill System)
Sean comments on the search for a suitable guitarist as having been two-fold; first requiring somebody who could comfortably pick up on existing groove and ethos, and then also inspiring confidence in the band members that they could bring their own style and energy to help take the band in a new and exciting direction.
“We are confident that Gareth will bring those qualities to the band, and we are totally amped to get started on writing new material and unleashing the next phase of Ill system to the people.” ~ Sean Olsen
