Cape Town, South Africa: the mother city’s premier recurring metal event is coming back on Saturday 29 July for it’s twenty-second installment, www.metal4africa.com‘s own WinterFest’17. This will be the event’s fourth installment at the newer venue at 12 Viben Avenue in Brackenfell, just a short way off of the N1 National Highway on the outskirts of the Mother City.
2017 has presented many attractive line-up opportunities, but with only limited slots available for this one-day musical outing, the selections have been made with a maximum impact in mind. With this also being the first event since 2013 to feature an international guest, the artwork has also been especially tailored to suit the occasion with an African-themed “Angel Of Death”.
Visiting from neighbouring Botswana – and returning to Cape Town for the first time in seven years – we will be joined by old-school heavy metal band Skinflint. The trio perform a bare-knuckle rendition of traditional metal, but richly infused with the mystique and intrigue of African folklore. The band has recently returned from a European tour supporting none other than Tarja Turunen (original vocalist for Finland’s Nightwish).
Another inclusion to make this festival a must-see will be Johannesburg’s melodic death metal titans SacriFist. With a 25-year career to it’s mighty name, this will be Cape Town’s last ever opportunity to see the nation’s oldest surviving legacy band live as it’s members – still consisting of two of the original founders – have announced SacriFist‘s retirement in 2017.
Capetownians will be truly spoiled at WinterFest’17 with even a third visitor from afar. Pretoria’s Maximum Carnage will be returning to the M4A stage after it’s spectacular death metal frenzy at WinterFest’14 three years ago. Also watch out for the coming of an album, Blackened Sun, from Maximum Carnage soon!
On the local front, the selections have been no less potent with Megalodon performing an album launch show at WinterFest’17. The band will be playing the final slot and an extended set filled with surprises as we fare the members well on their journey to Germany the next day to represent South Africa at the global Wacken Metal Battle.
Another legacy band takes the stage as it’s celebration of fifteen years rapidly approaches with Terminatryx. Bringing in a darker mood and a much needed change of pace between the masculinity of death metal, Terminatryx is a female-fronted industrial/dark rock band with plenty of metal influence to bring a taste of the dramatic to the line-up.
Subject To Slaughter is back! And you’ll see them play for the first time in 2017 live at WinterFest’17 with a new face, some new energy, and a bit of a fresh twist with their bone-crushingly chuggy style.
For the first time on the M4A stage, we welcome Bottom Feeder. Having only emerged in 2016, this band is redefining the meaning of heavy, and gritty distortion, and perform a style coldly referred to as powerviolence. Brace for impact!
Another newcomer into the M4A fold is the thrash/groove-infused Nethercyst, which has been making it’s presence strongly felt on the Cape Town circuit since the release of it’s first single late last year.
