Durban, South Africa: this nation’s third time participating in the global Wacken Metal Battle commences this weekend, starting with the first heat in Durban tomorrow night.
Four bands will go head-to-head in this installation at the Winston Pub at 9 Clark Road, Durban. Hope Is For Heroes, who would have traveled from the inland city of Bloemfontein have unfortunately had to pull out, but remaining are the capable Desolation, Minority For The Masses, The Fateful Dawn, and Vulvodynia. We were able to reach three of the bands for a little pre-battle commentary to try and gauge the spirit of the event and it’s participants: and the results indicate a sense of fun, enthusiasm, and even comraderie; yet determination is definitely not least!
“Ok, well, first off: a big thank you to Louis Du Pisani and all involved for this great opportunity and for supporting the local scene. We are very excited about the battle and the other great bands on the Line up as well. See you there. We gonna bring our thunder!” ~ Jake Blackwell (guitar/vocals, Minority For The Masses)
“Thanks for letting us be apart of the Wacken Metal Battle. We are super stoked to be able to play this event! It is great to see that the alternative scene is picking up once more. People attending can be sure that it will be an evening to remember. To our fellow contestants… Remember, music is art, not sports. Give it all you got and make the people come back for more!” ~ Johan Prinsloo (guitar, The Fateful Dawn)
We also caught up with death metallers Desolation who are returning for a fresh start after having competed in the first year’s battle:
“We are stoked to be part of this event again. We had loads of fun back in 2013 when we took part in the first battle. We have grown as a band since then; our music has definitely progressed and we can’t wait to showcase this.
There are some fantastic bands competing this year. Even though competition is fierce we look forward to having a good time with all the other bands… but we are still gonna bring it!” ~ Aldine Venter (Vocals, Desolation)
As a heavy metal public in South Africa, there is another significance to these heats – the fact that they serve also as the fundraiser which will aid in getting our representatives mobile for further steps of the contest. Door takings in their entirety are passed on to the winning band to assist them with travel and associated expenses, and therefore Wacken Metal Battle: South Africa implores upon the public to support each heat in full force. For full event details for tomorrow’s heat, visit the official facebook event page.
To all of the participants and the judges, we at M4A wish you all the best, and we will be following everything very closely. Good luck!
