From the idyllic setting of a traditionally styled English pub, located near South Africa's Cape Town, we set out on an unlikely journey to explore vast expanses of uncharted science and cosmic mystique. My travel companions included Ruan Jordaan (guitarist) and Thomas Theron (vocalist) of the city's eight-stringed metal phenomenon, Megalodon. With the launch of their debut album only days away, it was time to learn more about the bands origins and to discover what energies have driven Ruan, Thomas, and their band mates, to this point in time and space
Megalodon offers a unique alternative to the long-standing South African sausage-machine production. Falling under a unique genre, their debut album, Darkness in Sonance, offers plenty of variation throughout ten songs, dictating almost an hour of metaphorical terror within a tightly constructed package. Megalodon's ability to perform spectacular live shows coins them as one of South Africa's trump cards!
Anybody who has seen Mind Assault perform live would know that the band has their more lighthearted and quirky side, and which contrasts quite strongly against their mostly dark and serious lyrical content contained in all material released to date
Last seen in Cape Town in 2011, Juggernaught, are a band of men with beards, makin’ manly Southern rock. I know that this is a website dedicated to metal, but Juggernaught have bigger balls than a lot of metal bands in my opinion. Fusing bluesy riffs and lyrics with hard hittin' rock, this band ain't one to push aside. And besides, I haven't met a single metalhead that doesn't dig it like wors!
The other day, I sat down for a digital beard-wag with the boys from Juggernaught, through the haze of booze and smoke and got to know a bit about their upcoming album. Titled "Bring The Meat Back", it is set for release on the 26th of October, 2012.
If you have been reading this site for any length of time, you will know that Wildernessking are a band I could go on about for ages. I really feel they are one of the hardest working, most talented bands on the continent, not to mention being great sports when it comes to interviews! The dust has barely settled on the release of their latest single, ...And the Night Swept Us Away and they have already released a music video for
With Winterfest '12 right around the corner, we received an eleventh hour announcement from metal scene debutantes, Zombies Ate My Girlfriend! In honour of their first live gig, Zombies... will have their four track EP, Patient Zero available on the day of the fest
The South African metal scene is often criticised for being too samey and lacking the innovation that has characterised the (admittedly, much larger) European and American scenes. Trends come and go, with bandwagons often full to overflowing with groups hoping to become the "next big thing" on everyones lips and it takes a certain amount of vision to fly in the face of this to make the music that you want to hear
In March this year, death metal fans in South Africa were treated with the second Detonation Tour hosted by Valgar Entertainment, featuring the Italian band Fleshgod Apocalypse alongside a slew of local extreme acts. At M4A, and at our WinterFest’12 event, we aim to keep the 2012 death metal momentum rolling by treating Cape Town
