WinterFest’18: a concert hosted by

M4A WinterFest'18 highlighted event

Cape Town, South Africa: Join us for a day of Friendship and Metal

WinterFest’18 brings us to our twelve-year milestone for this all-Metal and all-African annual celebration. This year’s line-up includes two visitors from Gauteng, along with our usual diverse mix of local talent. As always, we bring you something new back-to-back with something old, and plenty in-between; ranging from brutal and intense to groovy and upbeat, and; from fun and cheeky to dark and serious. Welcome to another day out with and affiliates!

WinterFest’18 Line-up:

17:00 Kill Frenzy
17:45 The Valley
18:30 The Alpha Sequence
19:15 Surdus (JHB)
20:15 The Warinsane
21:15 Red Helen (JHB)
22:15 Nebula Disrupt
23:15 Atlantic South

Kill Frenzy arrived on the Cape Town gig circuit with a bang in 2017 and continues to build its name with relentless prowess. This four-piece is already bursting the boundaries of not only Cape Town, but indeed South Africa with its first international booking opening a door to Botswana for Rock The Nation in September. A deadly blend of thrash/punk musical sensibilities with the most extraordinary vocalist to appear in recent times, Kill Frenzy is not to be missed.

Five years on the scene, The Valley continues its ascent to rock’n’roll glory riding its unique brand of “desert doom”. Having a broadly eclectic appeal between rockers, stoners and metallers alike, The Valley evokes the spirit of rebellion and grit. Check out the tasty Obelisk EP released last year.

The Alpha Sequence finds itself in a transitional phase of discover; known for powerful riffs which blend melody and brutality into chaotic order. This is the band’s second time on the M4A stage, having opened the first show at the current venue back in 2016.

Surdus visits Cape Town for the second time in less than a year, having introduced itself to this city at Hellington late in 2017. At times we hunger for the dark and dramatic; Surdus will deliver! If Metal textured with orchestration, variable vocals, and a Gothic-like undertone appeals to your sensibilities, then it has been long indeed since Cape Town has enjoyed something quite like this.

The Warinsane is an old favourite wearing a new face. Gigging since 2006, this death metal band has seen a number of phases with members coming and going; ranging from technical to melodic to just straight up brutal. The latest addition to the band is vocalist Adri Jordaan, known and beloved from his time in Maximum Carnage and other bands.

Red Helen is a spectacle to behold. This Prog Metal powerhouse features one of the most charismatic front-men of heavy music in South Africa and blows minds with its instrumental genius. It comes as no surprise that Red Helen took the honor of representing its country at the Wacken Metal Battle finals in Germany in 2014, and also the SAMMA for ‘Best Album’ with it’s 2017 Trading Past for Pathways album. We’re delighted to host them for our first time on the M4A Stage this WinterFest’18.

Nebula Disrupt brings with it the full chill of a Norwegian winter woven into savage Black Metal. Also in the wake of its 2017 EP titled Libations of Omnipotence, the band featured strongly in underground circles around the country and beyond in that year; we are eager to have them finally come defile our stage for the first time since 2015.

Atlantic South are the perfect pick to close off the night on an epic high. This feel-good Melodic Metalcore band brings together some of the cities finest moshpits. Somehow, Atlantic South just manages to offer more of the same goodness riff after riff, with some flashy leads and powerful vocals to boot. Nobody will leave WinterFest’18 without having broken a sweat!

DJ Dancefloor, Market, Food & Beverages

Recent years have seen a lot more attention going into our outdoor buzz for those wishing to catch a breath away from the chaos with the bands inside. We’ve got you covered! A second entertainment area in the courtyard gives metallers a chance to toss some locks to familiar tunes between bands, plus to enjoy something to eat and charge those proverbial batteries.

Nytrox Productions once again takes care of a line-up of DJs for the outside dancefloor which will run from 16h00 until 00h00. Music played will include local and international favourites.

Band merch will be available from our own M4A Merch Stall, and other goodies such as clothing, jewelry and other paraphernalia from merchants trading in the yard. This year we welcome The Metal Hut, Punk Pixie and Leon Khunert (shaman) to the mix.

Food will be on offer from two vendors. Ben’s Boerie & Burger Bar will offer just that, and Vetkoek Paleis will provide a few options of fillings including a Vegan/Gluten-free vetkoek for more discerning needs.

Alchohol aplenty will be available from two bars; the main bar inside and a smaller bar next to the outside dancefloor, plus another shooter bar inside the main bar area. Hot beverages will be on offer in the Market area courtesy of PhatBru to ease the winter chills, or to help straighten you up before the journey home. Vegan-friendly options also available.

True Believer members

As usual, True Believer members can enjoy a private entrance down the red carpet with a complimentary beer immediately upon entry. What’s more is that we’ve created a lounge this time! True Believers are welcome to mingle with band members and other VIPs in the lounge created above the main bar. In fact, it’s the other way around. This is your lounge, which band members and other VIPs may come and enjoy. Of course, we’re not encouraging you to be snobs and sit apart from everybody else for the duration of the event, but if you’d like to steal away from the chaos for a few minutes or engage in more intimate conversation, then we’re trying this out at WinterFest’18 to see if this space can work for you.
