Wacken, Germany: South African band Zombies Ate My Girlfriend took first place at the 2016 international Wacken Metal Battle today, besting the top selections from almost thirty other nations from all over the globe. This is the first time that a band from Africa has been bestowed the top honour.
“This is literally the biggest thing that has ever happened to me, my Zombie brothers, and the South African Metal Scene. I am saying this literally minutes after finding out that we’ve won. My mind is a mess and my heart is elated. Myself and the lads are struggling to process this still. South Africa, we have just written ourselves into metal history! Thank you so much for supporting us with such fervent loyalty. This is not the endgame, this is the start.” ~ Adriano Rodrigues (guitar/writer, Zombies Ate My Girlfriend)
Zombies Ate My Girlfriend first participated in the Wacken Metal Battle in 2013 when the competition opened to South Africa for it’s first year where even as a new band, they made it through to the South African finals. However, the time was not right for them in that year where the local victors, Infanteria, made it through instead. This year, Zombies Ate My Girfriend which incidentally includes two members also from Infanteria, slid through the local heats effortlessly into the finals and beyond.
From all at www.metal4africa.com, and indeed no doubt from the entire South African and greater African metal community, we voice a massive collective congratulations!
Catch Zombies Ate My Girlfriend upon their homecoming with their Tour The Disaster closing date at The Assembly in Cape Town on 10 August for One Night In Cape Town (feat. August Burns Red), and then in Johannesburg on 24 September for Krank’d Up music festival (feat. Norma Jean and Periphery).
