South African metallers have had much to celebrate in 2013. With the Wacken Metal Battle seeing one local act jetted off to perform in Germany, another traveling to Ecuador, and some amazing local events and festivals under the belt, optimism is running high for an equally energetic and productive 2014. No less so with announcements having been made which include coming South African performance dates for the likes of Lamb Of God, Trivium, Killswitch Engage and more.
Before bidding farewell to 2013 though, the long-time friends at Sindulgence and Messiah Complex have teamed up with Buckley’s Edward Street and Monster Energy SA to bring you something special to commemorate the year with: The Summer Showdown 2013, a showcase of some great local metal talent at a very popular venue.
The line-up includes Infanteria, winners of the Battle for Wacken South Africa 2013 and an old favorite of the local scene. It came as surprise recently when the group said good-byes to their keyboard player, Jared, and reverted to their original four-piece format. Although a sad departure, it will be interesting to hear what they have to offer now having also recently been announced to perform at South Africa’s biggest alternative music festival, RAMfest. These thrash metal giants are armed and once again ready to show the country what they’re made of.
Another local beast that’s ready to ruffle your truffle and make you relive your drug-induced nightmares is Sindulgence, one of South Africa’s truly unique ensembles with a lengthening history in local metal performing at many of Cape Town’s prominent metal shows. Having released a well-received debut album and DVD in June of 2012, the group is currently working hard behind the scenes with local promoters as well as writing material for their upcoming album. Catch brand new unreleased material being debuted at this event.
Arguably the heaviest band of the evening: Messiah Complex provide a different take on metal that melds all kinds of modern sub-genres together to form something truly refreshing. These guys are rising fast in the ranks as they walk away from one after another of memorable shows. The band is currently in the process of writing their debut full-length album, check out their facebook page to get a taste of the fury that is Messiah Complex.
Burning Tone Records will also be hosting their usual amazing merch stall with quality local memorabilia from BTR bands as well as all bands performing on the night. Your MC for the evening is none-other than the amazing Mr Bryan ‘O Pines of Zone Radio – for those who’ve heard him before you’ll know the sharp wit and great narrative that this man brings to a party!
To tie it all together, the folks at Jägermeister South Africa will be sponsoring a hamper give-away for lucky audience members who attend. Buckley’s will be sporting their usual drink specials, please see the event page for more info. Come enjoy a great night of quality metal and more for a meager R10 before 21:00 or R20 thereafter.
