Film Festival Brings Metal Documentaries to Cape Town

Sound on Screen Music Festival
Last year, Flamedrop Productions brought a fantastic documentary to the big screen for Cape Town viewers, entitled “Get Thrashed”. It made up a part of their Sound On Screen annual film festival which features documentaries, biopics, and concert films – all about varying aspects of music.

“Get Thrashed” told the story of the rise of thrash metal during the 80’s and into the early 90’s, introducing viewers to the pioneering bands and interviews with some larger-than-life characters such as Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine and others. Besides being an awesomely informative and inspirational documentary, it was also awesome to go to a cinema and find it packed with metalheads. Sorry for you if you missed it!

On the 2nd of December, Sound On Screen returns with another bunch of great viewing experiences including the much anticipated “God Bless Ozzy Osbourne”, amidst others. Some films we thought would be of particular interest to the metal community include:

God Bless Ozzy Osbourne
Brand new first ever in-depth documentary on the life of the rock star that helped create heavy metal. Ozzy himself wonders how he’s survived his crazy life. The film features archive footage and new exclusive interviews with Ozzy, his family, musicians like his Black Sabbath band mates, Paul McCartney, Henry Rollins, Tommy Lee & more.

Amazing study on what music means to human beings, including a range of well-known musicians, producers, composers, scholars, scientists, actors and many more, including Nine Inch Nails, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tool, Funkadelic, Bob Ludwig, Eddie Kramer, Juliette Lewis, Strapping Young Lad, Dandy Warhols, Kurt Loder, The Flaming Lips, Modest Mouse, Guns ‘n Roses etc.)

BLACK METAL – A Documentary
With backstage interviews and raw live footage, you get an insight into this controversial extreme metal genre from the bands themselves, including its various pioneers, from Venom, Immortal, and Mortiis, to Enslaved, Gorgoroth, Celtic Frost & King Diamond.
