SAMA-Award winning metallers K.O.B.U.S. have hinted at the arrival of a new album sometime soon.
The bands previous album Swaar Metaal, released in 2007, saw the bands approach to music and performance take a full 180° when band members decided to revisit their roots as musicians and return to a metal direction. It was for this album that K.O.B.U.S. won in the category of Best Afrikaans Rock Album in the 2008 South African Music Awards. The project was originally begun in 2000 as an experimental journey into the Afrikaans language, characterized by a very non-metal approach which included re-sampling of sounds over beats and other experimental techniques. A hint back towards more traditional and heavier sounds already became apparent on the bands second album 100% Skuldgevoelvry, released in 2004.
The promises of a new album from the acclaimed band, featuring the legendary Francois Blom (of V.O.D fame) and Theo Crous (of Springbok Nude Girls fame) as founding members, were dashed in 2011 with the burglary of frontman Francois’ home studio where equipment containing the album-in-progress disappeared. Recent updates on the bands social media have made it apparent that they’ve since picked themselves up from the blow and work is underway on a new album to be released by the same title as intended for the missing material, Spoed Van Donker. This is contrary to earlier reports of an even newer album to be delivered by the title of Monster, which would have overshot the concepts for the lost 2011 album.
“I’m happy to say that ‘Monster’ has been shelved (but not killed) and we’re back to the despicable ideas of the original album idea.” ~ Francois Blom (excerpt from social media)
