Alexandria, Egypt: returning to the stage for the first time since appearing at the monumental Metal Blast Festival 2016 in Cairo, symphonic death metal band Odious will host a concert in the Montreal Club at Mediterranean Azur on Friday 31 March.
We spoke with the band’s drummer about the show which the band itself has organized, with support from Infernum Expectat traveling in from Cairo for the occasion. Metal concerts are a scarcity in Egypt, where often bands have to rely on their own ingenuity to ever reach the stage even in spite of the few promoters whose efforts are simply not enough to satisfy growing appetites.
“It bothers us that we cannot play our music more frequently because of the difficulties in the region, and the lack of promoters challenges us in finding venues or organizing a show. We’ve been hosting our own concerts in Alexandria since 2000.” ~ George Boulos (drums, Odious)
Odious, in fact, has been showing something of a pioneering spirit among it’s peers in the Egyptian metal scene. Apart from taking the proverbial bull by the horns and serving as their own concerts promoter, members of Odious have also been working across borders in the creation of their art. This can be detected in the band’s latest album release with Skin Age in 2015 where Odious collaborated with exciting international artists resulting in a thirty-four-minute masterpiece of oriental-inspired orchestral death metal.
Difficulties or not, the band endures! George cites the support of friends and fans as enough motivation to keep pushing for more live entertainment opportunities.
“The enthusiasm we’re receiving from our fans and the fact they are coming from different cities is really fueling the show.” ~ George Boulos
Montreal Club at the Mediterranean Azur Hotel is the place to be this Friday. The venue has hosted numerous rock concerts prior to Live Hot Fumes and has now opened it’s doors to a fresh sound. With strong support, perhaps the venue can become a new stronghold for Egyptian metal in the city. Full details can be found at the official facebook event page.
