Cape Town, South Africa: ‘The Disowned’ is a strikingly emotive new single from With Dawn. Of course, we’ve been waiting some time for new output from the atmospheric post-metal act, and we’re not disappointed.
The Disowned: influenced by a South African tragedy
This song hearkens back to earlier in 2021 where South Africans from all over the country were shocked by mass looting and burning in parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces.
“How could such a disgusting and blatant event occur with such disregard for your fellow man? And during the worst pandemic of our generation? It made me realise that we don’t belong on this earth – we don’t deserve our place in nature. We are a disease. We are a virus. But most of all, we are the disowned. We are the disowned because our leaders have failed us. We are the disowned because we have abandoned reason. Can we find a positive in this insane world? Can we find hope? Is there any hope? I believe there is. I believe we can, as the disowned, find the strength to collectively force a change and retake, and re-own, our world. We may have taken beauty and burnt it down, but we are the flowers that will revitalise our beautiful world.” ~ Kevin Rule (guitars/vocals, With Dawn)
Whilst far away in Cape Town, even we at M4A headquarters have family, friends and peers whose lives were seriously disrupted; not to mention the loss of lives and livelihoods by other South Africans during those terrible days. We can all resonate with Kevin’s sentiments on this one!
‘The Disowned’ is released as a standalone track. With Dawn continues to work on new material in the background for a new album; a continuation of The Driftwood Saga (not an actual title), as revealed earlier in 2021. We will post more news as receive it.
