Johannesburg, South Africa: the dual-fronted progressive metal band Hiraeth stirred up a storm roughly a year ago when it released the video for it’s first single, ‘Undying’. A year later and Hiraeth delivers a new visual offering for it’s latest single, ‘Lucid’.
Hiraeth is on an exciting trajectory. The band was nominated for no less than three categories in the South African Metal Music Awards, celebrated at the recent ceremony in Gauteng. Moreover, we’ll see Hiraeth live in Cape Town for the first time at our own SummerFest’20 festivites on 01 February.
Lucid: creative direction
Directed by the band’s front-lady herself, the video for ‘Lucid’ displays some beautiful yet jarring visuals. We caught up with her co-vocalist in Hiraeth for some commentary on the theme:
“I guess I would start off by saying the art and visual direction was inspired by lucid dreaming; and it has a likeness to Alice in Wonderland, but not too literal. We just wanted to try and portray that wonderland is not always wonderful, and that you need to wake up before it consumes you. In the video you see Marty wake in a strange place, which seems serene at first. But as time progresses, it takes a swift turn to a nightmarish hell. The band scenes are about calling her back to reality. In the end she fights and makes it back. The video is also about not letting go of people you care about, and no matter what they’re going through, to never give up on them. It could be addictions, depression or anything really. Russell wells and our Marty worked so hard to bring this concept to life, so we really hope you enjoy the video, and thank you for your support” ~ Gareth Reed (vocals, Hiraeth)
