Johannesburg, South Africa: the South African Metal Music Awards is gearing up to recognize achievements by local creators during the year of 2018. The SAMMA 2019 event serves to offer a ceremony for this, and to launch the next round of nominations for the 2019 year.
Most important for this week, however, is that public polls for the 2018 year are presently open and will remain open until midnight on Friday 13 September. During this process, all members of the public are invited to participate. The public polls to not determine a final winner. The public is asked to participate in this part of the process to assist the SAMMA Panel in eliminating nominations down to a top-5 per category. The SAMMA Panel will spend the next week doing a more thorough assessment on the last ones standing before all is revealed at the SAMMA 2019 Ceremony.

SAMMA 2019: recognizing achievements of 2018
And so categories that South Africa will celebrate at the upcoming event include: Best Metal Video; Best Metal Single; Best Metal EP; Best Metal Album; Best Metal Event; Best Live Metal Band; Best Metal Newcomer; Best Extreme Metal Band; Best Oldschool Metal Band; Best Progressive Metal Band, and; Best Alternative Metal Band.
Nominees have emerged from all over the country. A healthy mention goes to the categories of Best Metal Newcomer, Best Metal Event, and Best Metal Album of which all had more than ten nominations.
We feel that to mention Best Metal Newcomer is important, because it shows that metal is clearly not going away any time soon. New bands continue to emerge into the scene, and fresh ideas and sounds come with them. Best Metal Event caught our attention because it is noteworthy to see how much work is going into keep the nightlife/live aspect of our sub-culture alive and well. We couldn’t ignore the sheer volume of enjoyable Metal albums coming into the public space from local bands in 2018, and thus have to bring attention to Best Metal Album. It is heart-cheering indeed!
We’d sort of like to add Best Live Metal Band to this list, although we’re sure that you will agree it goes without saying that we’ve got great bands on the country’s stages. So we’ll save that list for you to visit the poll and see who made it on for the 2018 year.

Editor’s privilege: whilst none of the panelists nominated it in their respective five primary nominations, we’d like to make an honourary mention of Metal Circuit IV which took place in the Free State province. Whilst this might not enjoy the numbers and coverage other national events do, this is a very important annual landmark on the national scene as well.
